Volunteers

Being a reading volunteer is extremely rewarding and really fun! Many of the books the children read I read as a child myself, so it’s special to experience them again and hear what the children think of them. Watching them improve and gain confidence, especially when they find a book they really enjoy, is such a privilege.

Reading volunteers are essential at Woodborough because they provide extra support to help children improve their reading skills. By spending time with pupils one-to-one, volunteers boost children's confidence, help them develop a love for reading and strengthen their comprehension. This additional support is especially valuable for students who need extra practice, leading to stronger reading abilities by the end of Key Stage 2. Better reading skills contribute to improved outcomes across all subjects, as reading is key to understanding the entire curriculum.

We are extremely lucky at Woodborough to have a dedicated team of reading volunteers. However, we are always looking for new volunteers so that we can extend our support to those children who need it.

To cover 8 children in KS1 and 8 children in KS2 we need 10 volunteers - 5 per Key Stage.
  •  Ideally, we would like volunteers to commit to one afternoon per week (1.30-3pm).
  • You will hear 8 children read during the afternoon
  • We will give you training so that you are clear on what to do.
  • You will need to attend safeguarding training and complete a DBS check before you can get started.

If you would like to become a reading volunteer, please contact the office admin@woodborough.wilts.sch.uk for further information.
