Lime Class
Welcome to Lime Class (Year 5).
In schools in England, Year 5 is for children 9–10 years old, and is the third year of Key Stage 2. As the children enter Upper Key Stage 2, they begin to develop into more independent learners. They become much more skilled at using the resources available without adult prompting and also extend their own learning by becoming more proficient in the planning and evaluating stage of their work.
Although there is no statutory test at the end of Year 5, your child’s teacher will assess your child throughout the year to make sure that they’re at the expected level in English and maths.
In English work, there is a focus on using grammar and punctuation to improve our writing. It is important that we can name and use effectively a wide range of punctuation and vocabulary so that we can improve as writers. Independent editing is also a key part of our work. The children develop their reading and comprehension skills during our whole class sessions. Handwriting continues to be taught and the expectation is for them to use neat handwriting across all subjects. Speaking confidently is also a key skill and the children are given opportunities to present their ideas in groups and to the class.
In Maths we cover place value, statistics, geometry, fractions, measurement as well as mental and written methods in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
